Month in Review: MARCH

March began with one of the year’s biggest events, the President’s State of the Union address.

The Vice President wore a custom ensemble by go-to designer Sergio Hudson.

The look included a round-neck dress topped by a single-breasted coat with notch lapels, one-button closure, and a row of 6 buttons at each cuff.

The coat has design elements seen in the label’s “sculpted blazer,” featuring Mr. Hudson’s curved seams and fabric panels. Below, a Sculpted Blazer as offered at Saks, with the center photo digitally lightened to better show the seams. (The Vice President’s coat did not have the wide peaked lapels seen in these images.)

Another view of the Vice President.

In this red version of the Sculpted Blazer, you can also see the fabric panels and seaming as well as the six buttons at the cuff.

Before the SOTU address, Ms. Harris spent time speaking with NATO leaders from Eastern European countries about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

For those calls she wore Dolce and Gabbana separates.

March the 2nd, Ms. Harris traveled to Durham, North Carolina with Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh.

They visited Durham Technical Community College and toured the William G. Ingram Center for Learning and Applied Technology, seeing demonstrations from students taking part in an electrical apprenticeship partnership.

The Vice President spoke directly to students during her remarks:

You are role models — each one of you — of the work that can happen…It’s about tapping into the big brains and skills of folks and to help develop it and to train those skills to do such important work. It’s about growing our country and strengthening our country. We all came to visit you so we can see it firsthand and then go out and talk to folks about it.

She met a young woman named Eleanor. “Eleanor told MVP that when she grows up, she wants to be a pediatrician, and then she told me today was one of the best days of her life!”

Vice President Harris wore her pinstripe suit by Dolce and Gabbana and an unidentified silvery-grey blouse.

On March 4 Ms. Harris met with Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Both stressed the “strength of US-Bahrain ties” when speaking with the media.

Vice President Harris was in her black Dolce and Gabbana separates and her Lafayette 148 New York ‘Perla’ top.

Sunday, the 6th, Vice President Harris, Second Gentleman, cabinet members, and other officials traveled to Selma, Alabama. They were there to mark Bloody Sunday, the day in 1965 when Congressman John Lewis and hundreds of voting rights advocates tried to cross the Edmund Pettus bridge. The marchers were brutally attacked and tear-gassed by Alabama State Troopers.

More from this Atlanta Voice story.

The nation’s first female vice president — as well as the first African American and Indian American in the role — spoke of marchers whose “peaceful protest was met with crushing violence. They were kneeling when the state troopers charged. They were praying when the billy clubs struck.”

On “Bloody Sunday,” March 7, 1965, state troopers beat and tear-gassed peaceful demonstrators, including young activist John Lewis, who later became a longtime Georgia congressman. The images of violence at the Edmund Pettus Bridge — originally named for a Confederate general — shocked the nation and helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act.

The scene on the bridge this year.

In a social media post, the Vice President said, “Today, I stand with civil rights and community leaders on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Those who marched across this bridge 57 years ago marched for our freedom to vote. If we all continue to work together, to fight together, we will secure our rights.”

She delivered remarks in Selma:

“I stand on the shoulders of giants, who risked everything for our freedoms. The baton has been passed to us to continue the fight to protect our right to vote. Those who marched in Selma, marched for the freedom to vote and all the rights and freedoms that voting unlocks: economic justice, social justice, racial justice. We must do the same.”

Additional thoughts on the day’s significance and the Vice President’s role from this piece by Errin Haines in The 19th.

I was struck that she was speaking to a crowd that included the foot soldiers who were beaten and bloodied in that same spot, establishment members of the movement and younger activists who are new to the fight. Harris herself was a bridge in that moment, connecting the need to be vigilant about protecting democracy for people who are literally worlds apart.

For the day’s events, Ms. Harris wore designs by Michael Kors Collection. Her blazer looks like the Stretch Pebble Crepe Blazer ($567, originally $1890) in a color called ‘wheat.’ The jacket is made of virgin wool with a touch of polyamide and elastane. The single-breasted design features notched lapels, padded shoulders, flap pockets, and single button front closure. I believe the dress worn by Ms. Harris is the Double-Face Stretch Wool Dress (no longer available in this color) seen below. Done in a classic fit and flare silhouette, the sleeveless style incorporates multiple fabric panels, contoured seaming, and a round neck.

Monday, the 7th, the Vice President announced federal actions that “will expand clean public transit and school buses, reduce emissions from dirty diesel trucks, and create good-paying jobs,” per a White House briefing paper. Also taking part in the announcement, EPA Administrator Michael Regan and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Vice President Harris was in an unidentified checked jacket and trousers she has worn previously.

On March 9 the Vice President traveled to Poland.

— Ambasador Mark Brzezinski (@USAmbPoland) March 9, 2022

She met with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki for discussions on the situation in Ukraine.

She also met with President Andrzej Duda.

The two leaders held a joint news conference.

The Vice President said, “We stand with the people of Ukraine, we admire their courage, and we are aligned in our support of their sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

She spent time with representatives of the Ukraine refugee community and also announced an additional $50 million in humanitarian assistance to be distributed through US Aid.

Ms. Harris also met with US and Polish service members in Warsaw.

The next day, March 11, the Vice President was in Bucharest for meetings with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. Below, the two during a welcome ceremony at Cotroceni Palace.

The Vice President said they both “reaffirmed that the United States and Romania, along with our allies and partners, stand together in opposing Russian aggression in Ukraine.”

Another view.

Ms. Harris delivered remarks to the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting on Saturday, the 12th.

The Vice President wore her Tom Ford suit seen several times in the last few years. The pieces are done in a classic Prince of Wales check, with a fitted blazer and straight cut on the pants (unlike those seen below).

On March 15 Vice President Harris took part in White House Equal Pay Day events. Below, watching President Biden sign an executive order that “encourages — but does not order — the government to consider banning federal contractors from seeking information about job applicants’ prior salary history, ” per this PBS report.

Also on the 15th, an Equal Pay Day discussion with current and former US Women’s Soccer players, Kelley O’Hara, Margaret Purce, Briana Scurry, Julie Foudy, and Cindy Parlow Cone. Also taking part virtually were Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan. Ms. Harris noted that “women are paid less than men in America. On average, women working full time, make just 83 cents for every dollar made by a man. For many women of color, the gap is even wider.”

We return to the PBS story.

….players from the U.S. women’s soccer team…. recently won a $24 million settlement with U.S. Soccer in a discrimination dispute.

The settlement includes a commitment to equalize pay and bonuses to match the men’s team.

The Vice President wore an unidentified dark grey suit with a black blouse. In this photo released on March 16th, but shot on the 15th, you have a better view of the jacket.

On March 16 Vice President Harris delivered remarks about a new initiative from the administration, Project SERV.

More background comes from this Murjani Rawls story in The Root.

Historically Black colleges and universities around the United States have been operating under a continuous cycle of hate. Since January of 2022, 36 HBCUs have been targets of bomb threats. On the first day of Black History Month alone, 18 HBCUs had to suspend operations and go on lockdown. Thankfully, there were no devices found, but this is a coordinated attack on the psyche of Black students.

The program provides short-term immediate funding for local educational agencies (LEAs) and institutions of higher education (IHEs) that have experienced a violent or traumatic incident to assist in restoring a safe environment conducive to learning.

Thursday, March 17, the Vice President administered a swearing-in ceremony with Shalanda Young, the first Black woman to lead the White House budget office. In this photo, you also see Ms. Young’s father, Ronald Smith (2nd from right), and I believe that is Ms. Young’s husband with their daughter, Charlie.

Vice President Harris wore her black Dolce and Gabbana separates and an Akris top we’ve not seen for some time. Below, the Akris Punto Yucca & Agave Stripe Wool Ribbed T-Shirt (sold out).

The Vice President traveled to Louisiana on the 21st. She was there to talk about a $30 million grant to boost broadband access. Below, during a visit to a community library in Sunset, LA.

The funding will be used to connect more than 20,000 households and 3,000 small businesses. The Vice President noted in a social media post, “When we have students sitting in cars in fast-food parking lots doing their homework over public Wi-Fi, and seniors seeing doctors online in local public libraries—we have a problem. Our $65 billion investment in high-speed internet will impact millions.”

The Vice President wore her Altuzarra Kenton Jacket and Serge Pants.

On March 25 the Vice president addressed members of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators during a meeting in her Ceremonial Office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Vice President Harris was in the khaki-olive suit believed to be by Dolce and Gabbana and a black top.

Tuesday, March 29 Vice President Harris took part in the White House ceremony for the signing of the landmark Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act.

To the right of the President (soft green coat), you see Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of pioneering investigative journalist Ida B. Wells. Ms. Wells led an anti-lynching movement in the 1890s. More from FreeSpeech.org, “Michelle Duster…said at Tuesday’s bill signing, ‘Finally, in 2022, we have justice. We have laws that were fought for so long ago,’ says Duster, who thinks the law is ‘better late than never.'”

Below, the Vice President with (left to right) Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), Senator Ralph Warnock (D-GA), and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). The Vice President, Sen Booker, and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) co-sponsored the original legislation.

Also on the 29th, the Vice President met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

She wore her black Dolce and Gabbana separates again and the UFO chocolate brown blouse first seen in February of this year.

Vice President Harris wrapped up the month on the 30th with a meeting and news conference with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Month in Review: FEBRUARY 2022

February started with a discussion about possible SCOTUS nominees to fill Justice Stephen Breyer’s seat; the Justice is retiring at the end of this term. Below, the Vice President and President meeting on January 1st with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and ranking member Chuck Grassley(R-IA).

Ms, Harris wore an olive/khaki suit believed to be by Dolce and Gabbana.

On February 2, the Vice President joined the President and others for an event announcing the administration’s efforts to “reignite a cancer moonshot to end cancer as we know it.” This is a subject close to the Vice President’s heart as many readers are aware; her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, spent her career in breast cancer research. Below you see the Vice President and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff with Dr. Edjah Nduom, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Emory University School of Medicine.

Ms. Harris’s remarked at the event, “…my whole life, I stood witness as my mother, a scientist, worked to end breast cancer.”

Also on the 2nd, a meeting with the National Security Council about the elimination of ISIS leader Hajji Abdullah.

It looked like the Vice President was in her Tom Ford blazer ($3750) and pants, both done in a classic Prince of Wales check pattern.

The Vice President’s jacket has three buttons instead of the two shown in the product photo above, and her trousers have a slimmer cut than those seen above.

On the 3rd, the Vice President and President attended the National Prayer Breakfast. Ms. Harris also hosted a virtual swearing-in with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra of members of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

The Vice President wore the Proenza Schouler suit first noted during her trip to Paris and then seen again at the lighting of the National Menorah on December 1, 2021. Below, the Technical Wool Long-Line Blazer (originally $1889, on sale for $756).

February 4th the Vice President traveled to Maryland with President Biden, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, and others.

They visited Ironworkers Local 5 in Upper Marlboro, where the President signed an executive order on labor agreements.

Ms. Harris wore her Altuzarra Kenton jacket and Serge trousers.

Saturday, February 5, Ms. Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff did some shopping, making a stop at the iconic Jessie Taylor Seafood market.

Thank you for supporting our local businesses, @VP and @SecondGentleman! We hope you enjoy your fresh seafood from @jessie_seafood at the Municipal Fish Market. #TheWharfDC pic.twitter.com/2z9xwaq1ck

— The Wharf (@TheWharfDC) February 5, 2022

Doug Emhoff posted a photo of the duo as they were out and about, with the caption, “Nothing beats a Saturday market walk with your favorite chef.”

Ms. Harris also did some shopping at the District Doughnut shop at The Wharf.

Not every day that @VP stops by at @TheWharfDC! And for those curious, she bought lots of Funfetti Bites. #HappinessFound pic.twitter.com/LyHKQzBly5

— District Doughnut ? (@DCDoughnut) February 5, 2022

It looked like the Vice President wore her Moncler ‘Vaneau’ Puffer Coat (original retail was $1245; the item is no longer available) in the brand’s signature quilted fabric.

She was also sporting what appeared to be a new pair of boots that I have not yet had time to try and identify.

February 8, Vice President Harris delivered remarks encouraging Americans to sign up for the Expanded Child Tax Credit & Earned Income Tax Credit.

The Vice President was in her Dolce and Gabbana Micro-Check Print Blazer ($1437, originally $2395) and the Straight Leg Houndstooth Trousers ($525, originally $875) with her black Pleated Silk-Blend Blouse ($595) from the Michael Kors Collection line.

On the 10th of February, Ms. Harri joined the President and Democrats from the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss the Supreme Court nomination.

The Vice President wore her Dolce and Gabbana pinstripe suit and a blouse I couldn’t see well enough to identify.

The next day, February 11, Vice President Harris traveled to Newark, NJ.

Below, the Vice President and EPA head Michael Regan are welcomed by Governor Murphy.

More from The Root’s story by Murjani Rawls.

Together, they highlighted how successful the city of Newark has been in changing its lead pipes and improving the water supply. In 2019, Newark had a lead crisis where bottled water had to be handed out because the quality was terrible. Now, the replacement of 23,000 lines is almost done with no cost to citizens.

Ms, Harris hosted a roundtable discussion with “Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan, Gov. Phil Murphy, Mayor Ras Baraka, and other officials and residents, per ABC News.

Some of you may recall that on an October 2021 trip to Newark, the Vice President met a young woman named Ulani, doing her homework at a cupcake shop (seen below).

Ms. Harris saw Ulani again on this trip and got an update on how she was doing.

The Vice President wore the olive/khaki suit believed to be by Dolce and Gabbana referenced above in the entry for January 1.

On Valentine’s Day, the Second Gentleman posted this photo on social media with the caption, “Life is always brighter by your side. Happy Valentine’s Day, @VP.”

This photo was posted on the Vice President’s social media accounts on Valentine’s Day with the caption, “No better partner to have on this incredible journey. Happy Valentine’s Day, @SecondGentleman.”

It was taken January 21, 2021, at some point after the presidential inaugural prayer service at the White House. Vice President Harris was in an ensemble by Prabal Gurung.

February 16th, Ms. Harris performed a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony with the new Chair of the Export-Import Bank, Reta Jo Lewis (shown below). She did the same with Cynthia Telles, the new Ambassador to Costa Rica.

On the 17th, the Vice President traveled to Munich, Germany.

She was there to take part in the annual Munich Security Conference, described by the New York Times as “a way for Western leaders to discuss threats and dangers in an informal setting.” Ms. Harris headed the US delegation at the conference, which included members of Congress and other officials. Senators in attendance included Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). Below, the Vice President with members of the US delegation on February 18.

Also on the 18th, the Vice President met with heads of Baltic States including Estonia Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Latvian President Egils Levits, and the President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda.

The Vice President also met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

It looked like the Vice President was in her black Turlington jacket and coordinating trousers by Dolce and Gabbana.

She wore what I believe is a Michael Kors Collection blouse. Below left, Ms. Harris wears the Pleated Silk-Blend Blouse in black; today’s piece looks like that design but in a heavier fabric with more widely spaced pleats.

On February 19, Vice President Harris met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

A formal photo op with the Ukrainian President.

Ms. Harris also delivered remarks at the conference on the 19th.

The Vice President appeared to be in her Dolce and Gabbana separates again with a new (to me) chocolate brown blouse.

February 20th Ms. Harris spoke with members of the media.

Below, the Vice President boarding Air Force Two to head back home.

It looked like the Vice President was in another of her Dolce and Gabbana suits. Vice President Harris wore what appeared to be a new coat (seen above), a Dolce and Gabbana style. The Belted Double-Breasted Crepe Coat ($3345) is made in a blend of virgin wool and viscose.

The design features peak lapels, box pleats, and a self-belt. Below, closeups of the tailored piece.

February 23 Vice President Harris met with officers from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators to discuss voting rights and other issues.

She wore the Dolce and Gabbana’s micro-check jacket and trousers with a black top.

On February 24, Vice President Harris took part in a National Security Council meeting about Ukraine.

The Vice President did two swearing-in ceremonies on the 24th: one for the new ambassador to the Vatican, Joseph Donnelly, and the other for Scott Nathan in his new role as CEO of the US International Development Finance Corporation and another. Following the Scott Nathan ceremony, Vice President Harris also spoke briefly to the media about the Russian attack on Ukraine. From a transcript of her remarks:

I want to be clear that we know and believe that this is a war of choice.  It is unprovoked, it is unwarranted, and it is unjustified.

As the President made clear from the beginning: If Russia were to take aggressive action against Ukraine, our response would be swift and certain.  And that is, in fact, what has occurred.

The Vice President was in her Dolce and Gabbana Turlington Blazer ($2595) and matching pants. Beneath the jacket, she appeared to be wearing her Luxe Charmeuse Reversible Perla Blouse in navy ($239 on sale) by Lafayette 148 New York.

On February 25, Ms. Harris joined President Biden as he announced his nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Embed from Getty Images

If confirmed, Ms. Jackson, would be the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. She would also be the first Justice to have served as a public defender.   From the President’s remarks.

And I’ve been fortunate to have the advice of the — Vice President Harris — and I mean this sincerely — an exceptional lawyer, a former Attorney General of California, and a former member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

[Judge Jackson] has served both in public service as a federal public defender — a federal public defender and in private law practice as an accomplished lawyer in pr- — with a prestigious law firm.

If confirmed, she will join Justice Sotomayor as the only other member of the United States Supreme Court who has experience as a trial court judge –- a critical qualification, in my view.

From Judge Jackson’s remarks:

“If I’m fortunate enough to be confirmed as the next associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” Judge Jackson said in her own set of remarks, “I can only hope that my life and career, my love of this country and the Constitution and my commitment to upholding the rule of law and the sacred principles upon which this great nation was founded, will inspire future generations of Americans.”

Vice President Harris wore the Tom Ford jacket and trousers discussed above (the February 2nd entry).

On February 28 the Vice President joined the President, Dr. Jill Biden, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Cabinet members, members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Civil Rights leaders, Divine Nine leadership, and many others for a White House celebration marking Black History Month.

From the Vice President’s remarks:

Black History Month was established to teach the history that too often has not been taught: the history of Black excellence and leadership in America — (applause) — and also the history of resistance and resilience in America.

And we are clear: Black history is American history.  It is living, breathing history — history we create every day.

So, there is a lot to celebrate.  There is a lot to look forward to.  There is a lot to work toward.  And in remembering our history, we remember those great American heroes who continue to inspire and motivate us, who continue to remind us through our memory of them and their contribution and sacrifice what our role and responsibility is at this moment in history.

The Vice President was in her black Dolce and Gabbana suit with a top I haven’t seen well enough to identify.

Weeks in Review AUG 30 – SEP 3 & SEP 6 – 11

I have combined the last two weeks into one post because Vice President Harris had few public engagements the last week of August. She wrapped up the month on August 31 with a Capitol Hill appearance where she presided over a Senate session.

I can’t tell what she was wearing from the videos; there are no photos available that I can license. It looks like the Vice President may have been wearing some of her black separates by Altuzarra, but that is just a guess.

Week in Review Aug 9 – Aug 13

Vice President Harris did not have any public engagements on Monday, August 9. Tuesday, August 10, Vice President Harris visited the Unity Health Cares Brentwood Health Center in Washington, DC.

The Vice President delivered remarks about the administration’s efforts to lower health care costs.

She also announced that more than 2.5 million people have signed up for health care during the special enrollment period.

Tuesday afternoon, she was at the Capitol to preside during the Senate’s vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill. You can hear the Vice President announce the results in this video clip.

Below, the Vice President, President, and others as they watched coverage of the bill’s passage.

The Vice President then joined the President for remarks about the massive infrastructure bill.

Ms. Harris was in familiar separates by Altuzarra, her Kenton Jacket & Serge Pants. It looked like she was also wearing her Luxe Charmeuse Reversible Perla Blouse ($328) by Lafayette 148 New York.

Her accessories included her Manolo Blahnik Newcio pumps (below), double-strand pearl necklace by Irene Neuwirth, and unidentified mabé pearl earrings.

The Vice President did not have any public engagements on Wednesday, August 11. On the 12th, she hosted a meeting with business leaders to talk about child care.

From the New York Times:

Attendees included Mark Breitbard, chief executive of the Global Gap Brand; Jenna Johnson, the president of Patagonia; Josh Silverman, the chief executive of Etsy; Alison Whritenour, the chief executive of Seventh Generation; and Hami Ulukaya, the chief executive of the yogurt brand Chobani, among others.

The White House selected the executives because of their companies’ policies on child care and paid leave, a senior administration official said. In the meeting, Ms. Harris emphasized the importance of child care as both a personal and a business matter.

Vice President Harris was in a khaki suit I haven’t yet identified, and her L’Agence Cory Tee ($85), Irene Neuwirth necklace, and unidentified mabé pearl earrings.

Friday, August 13, the Vice President took part in an Instagram live session.

She spoke about voting rights with Storm Reid, an activist, producer, and actress, and Sarah Audelo, Executive Director of the Alliance for Youth Action.

The Vice President was in a blue blazer and white top, but I wasn’t able to tell if it was the Prabal Gurung blue suit or another style. (There were no photos released from the Instagram broadcast.) You can watch the conversation here.
